Trailer wheel alignment

Professional wheel alignment for all trailer types across the GTA and Southern Ontario.

Trailer alignment might not be the first thing on your maintenance checklist, but ignoring it will cost you far more than fixing it. A misaligned trailer axle chews through tires in a fraction of their expected life, forces your engine to work harder and burns more fuel, and puts extra strain on your suspension and hitch components every kilometer you drive. On the road, a misaligned trailer pulls, dog-tracks, or sways, and that becomes a serious safety problem fast.

At Axle Spindle Repair, we’ve been straightening out trailers for over 20 years. Our certified technicians handle every trailer type, semi trailers, tandem and tri-axle trailers, single axle trailers, torsion axle trailers, drop axle trailers, gooseneck trailers, and boat trailers using computerized alignment equipment that gives you precise, verifiable results.

Based at 5261 Bradco Blvd in Mississauga, we serve fleet operators, owner-operators, and independent trailer owners across the Greater Toronto Area, including Brampton, Toronto, Etobicoke, Oakville, and Burlington. Most routine alignments are completed the same day.

Trailer Wheel Alignment vs. Wheel Balancing, What’s the Difference?

These two services are often confused, but they solve completely different problems.

Wheel alignment corrects the angle and direction that your axles and wheels sit relative to the trailer frame and each other. Misalignment causes your trailer to dog-track, pull to one side, or wear tires unevenly across the inside or outside edge.

Wheel balancing corrects uneven weight distribution around a single wheel and tire assembly. An unbalanced wheel causes vibration and bounce at highway speeds, and creates cupping or scalloping wear patterns across the tread.

A trailer can have perfectly balanced wheels and still be badly out of alignment, and vice versa. If you’re seeing uneven wear across the full width of the tread, alignment is the likely culprit. If you’re feeling vibration or seeing a rhythmic wear pattern, balance is the first thing to check.

At Axle Spindle Repair, we diagnose both issues during our pre-alignment inspection and recommend only the work your trailer actually needs.

How Our Trailer Alignment Process Works

Trailer Suspension & Frame Inspection

Before any measurements are taken, we do a complete walkthrough of your trailer’s suspension and frame. We check leaf springs for cracked leaves, shifted center bolts, and pack fatigue; spring hanger brackets for elongated bolt holes and weld failures; U-bolts and axle seats for looseness or corrosion; equalizers, torque arms, and bushings for wear; and the trailer frame for bends, twists, or collision damage that affects axle geometry. This step is critical, because alignment corrections won’t hold if the underlying suspension hardware is worn or damaged.

 Precision Measurement

To determine whether an axle is out of square, our technicians use a plumb bob or laser to mark the exact center of each wheel hub on the shop floor. We then use precision measuring tape to check the distance from the front hitch reference point (the coupler or kingpin) to the hub marks on each axle. This reveals exactly how many inches each axle has shifted from its true position. For semi-trailer alignments, we use computerized alignment equipment that measures toe, camber, and thrust angle across all axle positions simultaneously and generates a detailed alignment report before and after the correction.

Axle Adjustment

If your trailer has adjustable suspension hardware, we loosen the adjustment bolts and slide the axle forward or backward until it is square to the frame. For trailers with bent axles, we use specialized hydraulic tools and chains to straighten the axle back to correct camber and toe specifications, verified with precision measuring equipment. When the trailer frame has shifted or sustained impact damage, we perform frame straightening before the alignment so the axle is corrected against a true, square reference.

Final Torque and Verification

Once all axles are properly set, we torque all hardware to manufacturer specifications — including U-bolts, spring hanger fasteners, and axle seat hardware. We then perform a final pass to confirm the trailer tracks straight, the thrust angle is correct, and there is no pull to either side.

How Much Does Trailer Alignment Cost in Ontario?

Trailer alignment costs in Ontario typically start at $150 for a single axle, $250 for a tandem, and $350+ for a multi-axle semi. While these are standard rates, the final trailer wheel alignment cost can increase if your trailer has seized bolts from road salt, bent hangers, or worn bushings that must be replaced before the alignment can be finished. Frequently Asked Questions

Aim to get your trailer aligned every 6 to 12 months or every 20,000 kilometres. Regular checks are the best way to catch issues caused by tight turns, hitting curbs, or heavy loads before they ruin your tires. You should book an inspection immediately if you notice your trailer “dog-tracking” (driving sideways), uneven tire wear, or if you’ve recently hit a deep pothole. Sticking to this schedule keeps your trailer pulling straight and saves you from buying expensive new tires prematurely.

Technically, yes, but it will not hold. If the suspension hardware that keeps the axle in position is worn, such as loose u-bolts, cracked spring hangers, or failed bushings, the axle will quickly go out of alignment under load. We always perform a pre-alignment inspection and will identify any necessary repairs before moving forward.

Dog-tracking (or crabbing) occurs when the trailer’s rear axles push in a slightly different direction than the front axles, causing the trailer to travel diagonally rather than straight behind the truck. It is usually caused by a misaligned thrust angle on tandem axle trailers. Trailer axle alignment corrects the thrust angle so that all axles push in the same direction and the trailer tracks straight.

A standard trailer wheel alignment, including a pre-inspection, typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the number of axles and the condition of the suspension components. It generally takes longer if the trailer is multi-axle or if the suspension parts are severely worn.
